KosshiKosshi

This guide is for 1.21 Beta. The released version is 1.20.

Markdown

Markdown is a lightweight way to format text using simple symbols — for example, wrapping a word in asterisks to make it bold or italic. It is widely used in blogs, note-taking apps, and documentation tools.

Kosshi supports a subset of Markdown. Markers are visible while editing and hidden when the cursor leaves the row.

Common Markdown formatting rendered in Kosshi.

Formatting Bar

The Formatting Bar appears below the outline. On Mac, choose Show Formatting Bar from the … menu at the upper right of the editor, or turn it on in Settings > Appearance > Controls. To hide it, choose Hide Formatting Bar from the bar’s own … menu. Select text or place the cursor in a row, then choose a button to apply formatting or insert an item.

Use the Formatting Bar to apply common formatting without typing Markdown markers.

The bar includes:

  • Bold, Italic, and Highlight
  • Checkboxes, Blockquote, Insert Table, and Insert Link
  • … for Prose, Strikethrough, Code, Code Block, Math, Math Block, and Image
  • # and % for headings and document comments when Headings (Beta) is enabled

The link and image buttons open a small form for the URL and optional display text. The bar scrolls horizontally when the window is narrow and is hidden while Preview is open. On iPhone and iPad, the same editing actions are available in the keyboard toolbar while editing.

Supported Formatting

Tables

Type a header such as | a | b | and press Return to start a Markdown table. You can also choose Insert Table from Find Action (Cmd+Shift+A), then edit cells and manage rows or columns with table commands, or switch to Edit as Markdown to change the source directly.

Edit table cells inline or switch to Markdown source editing.

Tables export with Markdown and other formats that support them.

Checkboxes

Type [ ] or [x] at the start of a row to create a checkbox. Click a checkbox or press Cmd+Enter to toggle it.

You can hide checked rows to show only remaining tasks.

Checkboxes render inline; completed items can show a strikethrough.

Blockquotes

Prefix a row with > to create a blockquote.

Blockquotes render with a vertical bar beside the text.

Code Blocks

Wrap code with ``` to create a code block. Add a language name like ```python for syntax highlighting.

Inside code blocks, Tab inserts 4 spaces for indentation.

On macOS, move the pointer over a blockquote or code block to show a button that copies only the block contents.

Add a language name after the opening backticks for syntax highlighting.

Math

Kosshi renders LaTeX math inline with the rest of the text.

SyntaxResult
$E = mc^2$Inline math
$$\int_0^1 x^2 \, dx$$Block math
Write inline math with single dollar signs and block math with double dollar signs.
