Row Selection
Move and edit whole rows with their children. Selecting a parent includes its collapsed children.
Text selection formats the selected characters. Row selection acts on the whole row.
Start on Mac
There are two ways to enter row selection.
- Esc selects the current row while editing text.
- Cmd+L selects the current row or rows touched by a text selection.
Esc handles active suggestions, input methods, or text selection first.
Extend and Reduce
Repeat Cmd+L to expand to parent branches; Cmd+Shift+L returns to the previous range. Expansion stops at the zoomed branch.
Adjust the range with Shift+Up/Down, Shift-click, or a drag in the left margin. Parents and children stay together.
Return to Text
Esc returns to the original caret or text selection. Click text to edit at that position.
Select on iPhone and iPad
In the outline body, touch and hold a non-text area, such as the left or right margin, to enter row selection.
Keep holding and move up or down to select more rows. You can also adjust the top-right or bottom-right handle, or choose Select Row from the editing menu.
Clear Selection
Tap the outline to clear selection. If the keyboard is hidden, tap the text again to edit.
To format characters, clear row selection and select the text.
