This guide is for 1.21 Beta. The released version is 1.20.

Sidebar

The sidebar shows bookmarks, saved searches, tags, and the outline tree.

Use the sidebar to browse the outline, bookmarks, and tags.

Navigating

  • Bookmarks appear at the top when at least one row is bookmarked
  • Saved Searches reopen queries that you use often
  • Tags let you search rows by # or @ tag
  • The outline tree lists rows so you can scroll to any section

Click an item to jump to the matching row in the editor.

Manage Tags

Open a tag's context menu to rename, pin, or delete it. Pinned tags stay at the top of the tag list.

With iCloud sync turned on, tag pins sync across your devices.

To hide # tags or @ tags, turn off Show #tags or Show @tags in Settings > Appearance > Sidebar. The same options are in the context menu of the Tags heading.

  • On macOS, right-click a tag
  • On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the tag section or a tag

Select Multiple Items

Hold Shift and click to select a range within the outline tree, bookmarks, saved searches, or tags. Open the context menu to apply an available action to the selection, such as removing bookmarks, deleting saved searches, or pinning tags.

Drag and Drop

  • Drag rows within the sidebar to reorder them
  • Drag bookmarks and saved searches to change their order
  • Drag rows between the sidebar and the main editor to move them to a different location

On macOS, you can also drag rows between open windows editing the same document. See Windows for opening rows in separate windows and combining windows into tabs.

Context Menu

  • On macOS, right-click a sidebar item
  • On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold a sidebar row

The menu provides actions for the selected row, including deleting it. It also includes commands for moving the row, adding a note, exporting the row and its descendants, copying its row link, and sorting, expanding, or collapsing child rows. On macOS, Open in New Window opens the row in a separate window.
